Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb Issues Statement on the "Martyrdom" of Islamic State of Iraq's Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi & Abu Hamza al-Muhajir

"No honor for us except with jihad"; France and Algeria's rulers are shown, with images of 'Abd al-Malik Droukdal (Drukdal), a.k.a. Abu Mus'ab 'Abd al-Wadoud (Wadud), the amir (leader) of AQIM, formerly the Salafi Group for Preaching and Combat.

Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM; Qaeda, Qaida) issued a statement about the "martyrdom" of the Islamic State of Iraq's two senior leaders, Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir (Abu Ayyub al-Masri), early today on jihadi-takfiri web sites. With the exception of the ISI itself, of which Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI) is the largest member group, AQIM is the first regional affiliate of Al-Qa'ida Central (AQC) bearing the "Al-Qa'ida" name to issue condolences to the ISI.

AQIM consoles transnational jihadi-takfiris on the deaths of al-Baghdadi and al-Muhajir, urges them to support the ISI in its time of need, and warns the "Crusaders" and "hypocrites" (those Muslims, the majority, who do not support AQC's and its affiliates' ideology) that the "blood of our martyrs" will simply be "fuel" for the continuation of its militaristic jihad (struggle).

Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus Eulogizes Islamic State of Iraq's "Martyred" Leaders & Pledges Support to Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi's Successor

"Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus"

The Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus (IEC), a coalition of mostly indigenous Muslim Caucasus insurgent groups led by Amir al-Umara' (leader of leaders, chief leader) Dokku (Dokka) Umarov, has issued condolences and a pledge of support to the Islamic State of Iraq upon the killings of its two senior leaders, Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir (Abu Ayyub al-Masri).

Background on the IEC can be found, via a previous post, HERE. Background on the ISI and al-Baghdadi and al-Muhajir can be found in my guest editorial, "The Death of a Caliph: Will the Reported Killings of the Islamic State of Iraq's Two Senior Leaders Spell Out the End of the Self-styled Jihadi State?", on Prof. Juan Cole's Informed Comment blog.

Major Iraqi Insurgent Group Jama'at Ansar al-Islam Issues Condolences to Islamic State of Iraq for Killings of its Top Leaders

Logo for Jama'at Ansar al-Islam's media outlet, Al-Ansar.

Jama'at Ansar al-Islam (AI, "Movement of the Partisans of Islam"), an Iraqi Islamist (Muslim political) insurgent group based primarily north of Baghdad, released a statement offering condolences to the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) for the killings of its two top leaders, Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir (Abu Ayyub al-Masri). The statement is respectful of the two, but lacks the proto-caliphal fervor of statements from groups closer to Al-Qa'ida Central's transnational ideology. AI's leadership, led by Abu 'Abdullah al-Shafi'i, declined to join the ISI despite being called upon to do so by top AQC ideologue Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri in 2007.

Leadership of Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen in Somalia Issue Condolences to Islamic State of Iraq upon "Martyrdom" of Its Leaders

The leadership of the jihadi-insurgent group Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen (Movement of Warrior-Youth; Al-Shabaab) in Somalia has issued a statement offering condolences to the Islamic State of Iraq and transnational jihadi-takfiris upon the "martyrdom of the heroes of this nation...Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi al-Qurayshi and...Abu Hamza al-Muhajir." They write that they received the news with "deep sorrow and grief, " but go on to say that their lives and deaths should be seen as shining examples. The leadership calls upon Iraqi Sunni Muslims to join the Islamic State of Iraq by declaring their allegiance to al-Baghdadi's successor, who has yet to be named, and rejecting the "Magis (Zoroastrians)", meaning Shi'i Muslims who they view as non-Muslims.

Background on the ISI, an umbrella for several of the most violent jihadi-insurgent groups operating in Iraq including Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI), can be found in my guest editorial, "The Death of a Caliph: Will the Reported Killings of the Islamic State of Iraq's Two Senior Leaders Spell Out the End of the Self-styled Jihadi State?", on Prof. Juan Cole's Informed Comment blog.

Harakat al-Shabab also said an April 27 kamikaze attack on an African Union military base in Mogadishu was "revenge" for the deaths of al-Baghdadi and al-Muhajir.

URDU: Islamic State of Iraq Statement Confirming "Martyrdom" of Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi & Abu Hamza al-Muhajir

"We Heed Your Call, O' Al-Aqsa (Mosque)....-Islamic State of Iraq"

An Urdu translation of the Islamic State of Iraq's (ISI) statement "to the Muslim nation" confirming the deaths ("martyrdom") of the "two commander, the two shaykhs," Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir (Abu Ayyub al-Masri) was released yesterday by the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), a shadowy transnational jihadi-takfiri media outlet.

Al-Baghdadi was addressed as the "commander of the faithful" (amir al-mu'mineen), a title reserved historically by Sunni Muslims for the caliph, the legitimate head of an ideally unified Islamic state. He was, in effect, the proto-caliph for the Al-Qa'ida-brand transnational jihadi-takfiri state project in Iraq. Top Al-Qa'ida Central leaders, including its deputy commander and chief ideologue Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, addressed al-Baghdadi in this way. Al-Muhajir, an Egyptian, was the head of AQI as well as the "prime minister" and "minister of war" of the ISI. He succeeded AQI's founder, Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, after the latter was killed in a United States airstrike in June 2006.

Lengthy Interview with Sirajuddin Haqqani, Afghan Insurgent Leader

Embedded below is a just-released, lengthy question-and-answer with Afghan insurgent leader Sirajuddin Haqqani, a son of the legendary Afghan insurgent commander Jalaluddin Haqqani, who is known for maintaining close ties to foreign jihadi groups operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan, including Al-Qa'ida Central (AQC). The "interview" was conducted by the Ansar al-Mujahideen jihadi-takfiri web forum.

A previous interview with Sirajuddin is available, in English-language translation via a previous post, HERE.

Jihadi-takfiri Anti-Shi'i Film, "The Killers: Shi'i-Rejectionists"

"Scholars of the Shi'a" shown with the former U.S. viceroy in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, as an ally of "Crusaders" and "Zionists."

On April 20, the Fajr Center, a shadowy transnational jihadi-takfiri media outfit, released a "documentary" film that is a model of anti-Shi'i Muslim polemic and it follows a familiar pattern used by jihadi-takfiris in their verbal/visual attacks on Shi'is. It is rather poorly produced in terms of the way it is put together and is actually quite dull. One would expect a better film from the distributor of all media materials produced by Al-Qa'ida Central (AQC), Al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), and Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

The film is entitled, "The Killers: Shi'i-Rejectionists," and it accuses Iraqi Shi'is of committing atrocities against the country's Sunni Muslims. Although it is true that some Iraqi Shi'is have indeed committed crimes against Sunnis, the Fajr Center's film is driven by sectarian hatred, not a desire to unveil the brutal truths of Iraq's low-scale civil war in 2003-2007. The film's advertising banner includes images of Sunnis tortured and murdered by Shi'is as well as pictures of top Iraqi Shi'i leaders, including Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki, al-Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr, top Sadr Movement leader Shaykh Hazem al-'Araji, and Grand Ayatullah al-Sayyid Muhammad Sadiq al-Sadr.

ENGLISH: Leadership of Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen in Somalia Reaffirming Goal of an Islamic State & Role in "Global Jihad"

An English-language translation of a recent statement from the leadership of the Somali jihadi-insurgent group Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen (Movement of Warrior-Youth; Al-Shabaab) was released yesterday by the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), a shadowy transnational jihadi-takfiri media outlet. The original Arabic-language statement can be viewed, via a previous post, HERE.

The original Arabic-language statement, released via Harakat al-Shabab's Al-Kata'ib (Brigades) Media outlet, reaffirmed the group's goal of setting up an "Islamic" (according to them) state in Somalia, unifying the lands of the Muslims. It also discussed the leadership's self-identified role in "the global jihad" of Al-Qa'ida Central and its regional affiliates and allies. They seek to destroy "the apostasy of secular system of worship" because these "un-Islamic" systems place the human being above God. It is only through the establishment of a Harakat al-Shabab-style state in which the "application of Islamic law (according to them)" that the Muslim nation can rebuild itself.

The statement also restates the group's dedication to liberating the "sacred lands," the land of historical Palestine. The group combines both transnational and nationalist ideologies and goals. Despite its global rhetoric, Harakat al-Shabab has focused its operations inside Somalia.

Afghanistan Taliban Mark 31st Anniversary of Communist Coup in Kabul

Statement of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Regarding the 31st Anniversary of Condemnation of the Saur Evil Coup de’tat

April 27, 2010

On April 28 falls the 31st anniversary of the communist coup de’tat in Afghanistan. It is the beginning of the ongoing tragedies of the three decades and the consequence of insouciance and anti-Islamic attitude of the past regimes. In fact, this coup de’tat was launched as part and parcel of rivalries between the two main blocs of the world—capitalism and communism. Each wanted to extend its tentacle over the Warm Waters of the India Ocean and the Gulf oil resources. To achieve this goal, they intended to occupy Afghanistan and efface its Islamic identity and sovereignty. Their domestic henchmen, the Khalqis and Parchimites, were assisting them in this faithfully, by raising attractive and deceiving slogans of shelter, cloth and bread.

The Khalqis and Parchimites like the present secular elements, wanted to foist a communist system on the Muslim people of Afghanistan without taking into account the objective realities. They were implementing the internal and external policy of Afghanistan as per the advice of the Russian advisors who were completely ignorant of the Afghan culture. The Khalqis and Parchmites elected to take some implausible measures and decisions against the religion, people and the noble Afghan culture.

They buried alive thousands of true sons of this land underground and tortured hundreds of thousands of them. They called all the steadfast and honor-loving Afghans who opposed their atheist regimes, as agents of the foreigners. The Afghan Mujahid people, on the basis of their faith, rose against the communist regime of Khalq and Parcham and later against the invading Red Army, giving them an unforgettable lesson, by launching a sacred Jihad against them. Then, the Red Army was considered as invincible and irreversible. By then, the Western rulers had come round that recapturing land from the Red Army was impossible; whereas the communist rulers in Kremlin had contemplated that a communist revolution in the whole region was a compulsion of the history i.e. it shall occur whether some one wants it or not.

Before the coup de’tat, they believed the change should come after a cultural revolution. But now they contended that coup de’tat was a short-cut for grabbing power in the Islamic countries.

These are the unimpeachable facts of that time. The West has now intentionally forgotten them and closed their eyes to admit the splendid acts of heroism of the proud Afghan people who saved the Islamic and non-Islamic world from the claws of communism.

It was only the Afghan Mujahid people who withstood the Red Deluge and permanently effaced the arrogant empire of the former Soviet Union. However, on April 29, when the surrogate communist regime was toppled thanks to the sacrifices of 1.5 millions martyrs and the jihad parties gained political power in Afghanistan, they, unfortunately, focused on their personal goals rather than aiming at establishing an Islamic government. Thus, they frustrated the suffering afghan people who had been nurturing the hope of seeing sovereignty of an Islamic government in the country.

To put an end to the corruption, anarchy and mischief in the country, some honest Mujahideen who felt their obligation, rose to the occasion in the shape of the Taliban Islamic Movement, launching their struggle for restoration of security and establishment of Islamic system. This struggle has been continuing as of to date, having passed through different phases ; and the Mujahideen have been solidified in the vicissitude of times.

It is worth mentioning, the Red Army invasion of Afghanistan and their defeat, the failure of America and NATO in Afghanistan in the past nine years are live lesson for the arrogant America. The Afghans are not kowtowing before the black colonialism in the shape of the so-called democracy as they did not do that before the Red colonialism in the shape of communism. This is because the Afghans now can realize the real intentions and goals of the enemy behind their flagrant and attractive slogans.

The Americans like their formers Soviet Union, have martyred thousands of Afghans and detained thousands of them in Guantanamo, Bagram, Kandahar and other secret jails. They have perpetrated crimes in violation of all rules of human rights under the name of fighting terrorism—even the brutalities of the past invaders seem minimal in comparison to theirs.

They also claim that now the world is uniplolar and there is only one super power and that is America. However, they are forgetting that in the near past, in this land, by the hands of these Afghans, an empire stronger than theirs, did collapse and fell smithereens.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, while condemning the April 28 (Saur) coup de’tate and considers it as a colossal tragedy and a source of all the suffering of the Afghan Muslim people, meanwhile reminds the rulers of the White House to be aware of the consequence of the day that you will end up regretting the mistakes that you are making in Afghanistan today as now the remains of the Red Empire of communism are regretting their mistakes.

It is more plausible and rationale for the Americans to desist from turning Afghanistan into a bastion for achievement of colonialist goals in the region and the world under the spurious name of fighting terrorism. They should let the Afghans to pridefully live under the shade of Islamic system in an independent country. In this, lies the secret of stability and security of the whole region. The rulers of the puppet Karzai Administration should take lessons from the consequences of the henchmen of Kremlin, the defeated communists. They should abstain from bowing before their foreign masters and instead, side with their people and nation. They must trust their own people and not let them be prosecuted at the hand of the foreigners.

The Premier Jihadi-Salafi Shaykh, Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, Eulogizes Islamic State of Iraq Leaders Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi & Abu Hamza al-Muhajir

"May God protect the Shaykh, Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi"; Iraq and Jordan (where al-Maqdisi lives) are shown in the bottom left-hand corner.

Shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, arguably the most influential jihadi-Salafi religious scholar alive, has penned a eulogy for Abu 'Umar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir (Abu Ayyub al-Masri), the two senior leaders of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) who were killed on April 18 by United States and Iraqi forces near Tikrit, Iraq. The ISI is an umbrella organization for several of the most violent jihadi-takfiri groups operating in the country, the largest of them being Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI). Al-Baghdadi was the proto-caliph (head of a unified Islamic state) of the ISI, addressed by top jihadi-takfiri leaders, including Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, as the "amir al-mu'mineen" (commander of the faithful), a term historically reserved by Sunni Muslims for the caliph. Al-Muhajir was the head of AQI as well as the "prime minister" and "minister of war" of the ISI.

Al-Maqdisi is a prolific writer and a much admired jihadi-takfiri ideologue. He has been attacked by the most radical faction within the transnational jihadi-takfiri movement following his criticisms of his former student, Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, founder of AQI, for his group's attacks on Iraqi civilians and Shi'i Muslims. Although al-Maqdisi does not believe Shi'is are Muslims, he disagreed with al-Zarqawi's attacks on them.

Abu Yahya al-Libi: The Modern Day Banu Qurayza and America...A Hotbed of Treachery & Source of Evil

Embedded below is a new essay written by Abu Yahya al-Libi, Al-Qa'ida Central's (AQC) "mufti," its chief religious jurist and preacher. It is entitled, "(Banu) Qurayza and America: A Hotbed of Treachery and Source of Evil" and references the Arab Jewish tribe that betrayed the Muslims of Medina during the Battle of Khandaq (the Trench) in 627 C.E. when it looked like the pagan Meccans would win, despite having signed a treaty to support the Muslims in case of attack by the Meccans. Abu Yahya's refers to "defeatists" among the Muslims today as modern day "Qurayza," and he says that their attitude is counterproductive to the goals of the "true Muslims", which in his mind are those who support AQC.

After Khandaq, the Medinan Muslims under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad defeated the Banu Qurayza in battle. He allowed a man severely wounded in the battle, Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, to decide the punishment of the Banu Qurayza for breaking the treaty and siding with the Meccans. Ibn Mu'adh decided that the Qurayza males would be executed and several hundred of them (estimates by historians put the number at between 400-1,000) were. The women and children were sold into slavery, a common practice during this historical period in many parts of the world. Some modern writers, including many anti-Muslim polemicists, have argued this "proves" the Prophet was anti-Semitic, though the Banu Qurayza, according to most historians of early Islam and the extant sources were not killed for being Jews. Rather, they were killed, these historians argue and these sources say, because they committed an act of treason by breaking their treaty with the Prophet and siding with the attacking Meccans.

One group of Muslims that Abu Yahya singles out are the mystics (Sufis), of whom he writes: "One type of worship should not be sacrificed for another, let alone be confined to one aspect, something which is closer to the worship’s total cancellation than its fulfillment. An example of this is the Sufis who turned the religion into living in darkness, mentioning of Allah, continuous clicks of rosary beads night and day, and long and arduous daily spiritual routines which can hardly be completed. This is coupled with de-pending on others for their sustenance, begging from people, disgracing themselves, thinking themselves to be depending upon Allah and devoting all their time to worship, something they feel consists of nothing other than solely what they are involved in. They see carrying out other duties to be hardness of the heart, unimportant frivolities, and impediments in attaining the highest ranks of closeness to Allah. See how at cer-tain times, when the enemies were swallowing one Islamic land after another, spreading sin and corruption on earth, killing, plundering and desecrating honor, many of these “devout worshippers” remained devoting themselves to the “greater Jihad” of fighting their desires and evil whisperings, chasing after the most minute of its desirous hints, and purifying atom-worths of its impurities. These things prevented them from perform-ing the “smaller Jihad”, which was fighting off the traunsgressors, and thus they entered the caves of monk-hood which they introduced, something not prescribed for them in religion, but rather leading them to leave its fold."

He also argues that the Banu Qurayza incident "proves" that modern day "true Muslims" (those few who support AQC) can execute all prisoners of war and not only those believed to pose a threat. Abu Yahya seems to be writing in reference to recent statements by mainstream Sunni Muslim scholars against AQC and its formulation of militaristic jihad (struggle), such as the fatwa of Tahir ul-Quadri and a conference in Turkey that reinterpreted a famous fatwa (juridical opinion) of the medieval Hanbali Sunni jurist Ahmad Taqi al-Din ibn Taymiyya that is often cited, out of historical context, by jihadi-takfiris.

Abu Yahya's essay was released simultaneously in English and Arabic. Both versions are embedded below. The essay was distributed by the Al-Fajr Center, a shadowy transnational jihadi-takfiri media outlet that distributes multimedia material from AQC, Al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), and Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Assalaamu alaykum,

"Allah has purchased the believers, their lives and their goods. For them (in return) is the Garden (of Paradise). They Fight in Allah's Cause, and slay others and are slain, they kill and are killed. It is a promise binding on Him in the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel), and the Qur'an. And who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. It is the achievement supreme."
Qur'an 9:111

Quote:
The sun has set for the last time and the moon has risen shall rise no more
Not again shall they rain fall upon your, nor shall you feel the cold of snow
Likewise the wind as blown its last, and the stars no longer illuminate you

You are in the sun now, basking in its warmth, holding the moon in your hand
The weather is fair where you are, never shall you want to feel hot or cold
Sitting in the clouds you need not could the stars for you already know their number

So the old chapter has closed, but a new book is being written now
A chapter which is written not with ink, but in your blood, your sweat, your tears
Penned now is a book with gold and pearls, embellished with musk and rose petals

How many have fallen? They are those who have been true to their oaths
How many more are yet to fall, and who await that day with such eagerness their may burst?
And when your body falls, so does your spirit rise, and when you die, so are many born

O how they laugh at your bloodied bodies, but your blood smells like sweet perfume
And how they mock you as they mocked Abu Mus'ab, but they are ignorant
You have been reward with that which you had been seeking, your desires have been met

Like lions you hunted the kuffar and killed them, and like poachers they slaughtered you
But the lion cubs of Tawhid shall not remian silent, and the day of revenge is coming
So we gnash our teeth, hungry for vengence, hungry for the flesh and blood of our enemies

How proud is your Ummah! You have stood up for us, you have restored our honor!
Your blood has washed away disgrace, and with you have given us hope that cannot die
We miss you, my dears, but our tears of sadness cannot compare to your tears of joy in Paradise

In the Gardens of Paradise you reside, and amongst Prophets and Martyrs you mingle
With the Hoor of your right arm, and to your left extends fruits and flowers beyond eye's reach
How sweet a reward for such an expensive dowary! And surely you have gained a bargain!

Dearest Amir-ul-Mumineen, as our leader you have served a prime example that we should follow
Beloved Secretary of War, such a noble fighter, such a brave hero! You are an icon of chilalry
Asadullah Alshishani writes these words with tears in his eyes wishing he had fallen beside you

URDU: Interview with Sirajuddin Haqqani, Son of Afghanistan Insurgent Leader Jalaluddin Haqqani

Sirajuddin Haqqani, one of the sons of the Afghan insurgent-jihadi leader Jalaluddin Haqqani (center) and a deputy commander in the Haqqani network, recently answered questions via jihadi-takfiri web forums. The Haqqani network is one of the deadliest in the country and Jalaluddin has maintained ties to Arab and other foreign fighters since the days of the 1980s anti-Soviet jihad, when he was a key United States ally.

The interview was quickly translated into English and Urdu from the original Arabic, suggesting that the dissemination of it to larger potential pools of jihadis is a priority.

The Urdu-language translation's cover features an image from a video produced by the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). I wrote a previous post about this ISI media production office.

An Urdu-language translation of the selected questions from readers and his answers is embedded below. The original Arabic transcript can be viewed, via a previous post, HERE. An English-translation can be viewed, via a previous post, HERE.

Cyber Jihadi-takfiri Claims "Victory for the Real Muslims" in South Park-Revolution Muslim Affair, or, Why Censorship is Bad

*Cyber
jihadi-takfiri "at-taqwa" (piety, piousness) crows about the "clear victory" of "the real Muslims" (jihadi-takfiri types), as evidenced by Comedy Central's decision to censor Episode 201 of the animated comedy show South Park, which included the Prophet Muhammad as a character. The company's decision, "al-taqwa" alleges, was because of thinly-veiled threats issued by a couple of radical American Muslims who run a web site, Revolution Muslim. Their crowing is run without edits.

A Clear Victory for the Real Muslims: ‘South Park’ Episode Is Altered After Muslim Group’s Warning

The new episode of “South Park” on Wednesday night tried to revisit this character, but with the name and depiction of the character blocked out. It was unclear how much of the bleeping was Mr. Stone and Mr. Parker’s decision. In a message posted on their Web site, SouthParkStudios.com, they wrote that they could not immediately stream the new episode on the site because:

After we delivered the show, and prior to broadcast, Comedy Central placed numerous additional audio bleeps throughout the episode. We do not have network approval to stream our original version of the show.

On Thursday morning, a spokesman for Comedy Central confirmed that the network had added more bleeps to the episode than were in the cut delivered by South Park Studios, and that it was not giving permission for the episode to run on the studio’s Web site.

April 2010 Issue of Afghanistan Taliban's Arabic-language Monthly Internet Magazine, Al-Samood

The new issue of the Afghan Taliban's monthly Arabic magazine Al-Samoud (Al-Somood) has been released. "Al-Samoud" translates approximately to the ability to withstand something or "staying power." In context, it can also mean something akin to "resistance." The magazine began as a simple newsletter-type publication with no graphics, but over the past couple of years has developed into a much more refined (design-wise) Internet publication. The cover of this month's issue speaks of a "struggle (jihad) in the path of the liberation of the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque" in the contested city of Jerusalem, which is holy to Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

The March issue can be viewed, via a previous post, HERE.

The Anatomy of America's Defeat in Afghanistan

Below is an article run on the official English-language web site of the Afghan Taliban, which refers to itself as the "Islamic Emirate [state] of Afghanistan" (as it did in the 1990s). The article is run without edits.

With the long awaited decision by the Obama Administration in regards to the new strategy for Afghanistan, the situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated to the point that the US commanders started using the word ‘defeat’ in their report to Washington. The word defeat has rarely been uttered by military; however, Afghanistan is the exception, where defeat is a realistic outcome. There, defeat is a reality that all invaders have faced since the beginning when Pashtuns have inhabited this region. The Pashtuns’ resistance is one of multiple factors characterizing the Anatomy of US’s Defeat in Afghanistan, where the inevitability of defeat for the US and NATO appears to be a certainty.

FACTORS OF DEFEAT
American Military underestimated the Afghans (Pashtuns)

When the American troops landed in Khanabad Air Base in Uzbekistan, they were confident that the defeat of the Taliban and take over of Afghanistan was inevitable. Their behavior was typically American characterized with excessive over confidence totally oblivious of Afghan history. Characteristically, they did not expect to suffer significant casualties either; however, much to their dismay, American causality has become quite apparent The overconfidence of American military was detailed by a reporter of IWPR:

“…in October when the Americans began deploying at the airport,
they were gung-ho, telling their Uzbek counterparts that it would take no more than a month and a half to defeat the Taleban…”

The report continues:

“Uzbek army personnel working at the air base said scores of US casualties have been arriving there. From November 25 to Decemeber [sic] 2, an Uzbek orderly working with American medical staff said he had witnessed the arrival of four to five US helicopters - carrying between them 10-15 American casualties - each day.”

The wounded soldiers that had returned from Afghanistan were frustrated by the sudden change in their self-perceived invincibility. The frustrations of the wounded soldiers on the base played out in daily occurrences of shouting and name-callings. These were the same soldiers that had heroic mentality before entering Afghanistan.

Similar experiences were reported in other parts of Afghanistan. For example, during operation Anaconda in 2002, America had used massive firepower to subdue a Taliban Commander Saifu-r-Rahman Mansoor in Shah-e-Kot in Southeastern Afghanistan. The Americans thought they could destroy the Afghan resistance by having superior airpower. They learned this to be more a wishful thinking. In the days of the fighting, Pentagon made various extravagant claims of having destroyed Mansoor’s defenses and killing more than a thousand (1000) Taliban fighters. The facts were otherwise. The US forces went to the battle with a heroic mind set, but they were bitterly surprised when they sustained heavy losses and had lost 16 helicopters ranging from apaches to Chinooks. The escalation reached a point of no return when 22 American Special Forces were caught alive. The heavy losses coupled with the captured soldiers started to take its toll on the US forces until March 10, 2002 when General Tommy Frank decided to pull back 400 troops to Bagram. The official explanation was that the conflict had ended for the most part while media reported that the troops suffered from battle fatigue. The truth was that the pull back was an attempt at building confidence aimed at convincing Taliban that American military is serious in seeking the release of the 22 Special Forces Commandos. The Taliban Commander, Maulana Mansoor demanded the release of all captives held at Guantanamo Bay in exchange for the 22 Special Forces soldiers.

Meanwhile, as the US forces encountered stiff resistance, it claimed to be fighting against a force of 1000 fighters when in reality there were 100 Afghan fighters, 120 Uzbek, and 30 Arab fighters. The US claimed to have killed 700 of 1000 Taliban/Al-Qaida fighters:

“U.S. military spokesmen estimate 700 out of roughly 1,000 Islamic extremists have been killed in the past nine days of fighting, which has cost the lives of eight Americans and three allied Afghans.”

The number of Taliban and foreign fighters killed stood at 88 (mostly Uzbek including 8 Arabs) while the number of US, British and others were much higher. Different media sources reported different numbers in regards to US losses. For example, the Russian online newspaper Strana.Ru on April 8, 2002, reported that the US lost 100 Special Forces and four Apache helicopters. However, data obtained from the battlefield put the casualty figure at 228 killed. From this figure 186 Americans killed in the battle, 22 prisoners executed when the US refused to release Guantanamo prisoners and 20 British SAS were killed when their vehicles were ambushed. The 186 killed Americans included those that were onboard helicopters. The total number of helicopters shot was 16 out of which two Chinook and 6 Apaches were totally destroyed and the remaining crash landed. The Canadians and Australians killed were reported as victims of friendly fire.

This is what happens when armed forces exhibit patronizing mentality and underestimate the enemy.

American Brutality-Excessive Use of Force and Racist View

The sheer use of excessive force coupled with individual cases of callous murder and torture could be viewed in the dichotomy of intention and reaction. The aspect of intentionality points to the way the military views the targeted population. The US military as an institution and their personnel must consider the people they bomb or murder perhaps less human, otherwise, the excessive use of force, committing murder and tortures would not be wide spread in their ranks. For example, by October 2002, the first anniversary of US invasion of Afghanistan, more than 10000 tons of bombs dropped on Afghan soil. (Socialist Worker Online, October 11, 2002) Imagine the magnitude of carnage and contamination caused by such massacre. While another report by Kate Randall on December 2001, put the number of US bombed dropped at 12000:

"Since the US launched the war on Afghanistan October 7, more than 12,000 US bombs have been dropped on the country. According to the Pentagon, about 60 percent of these bombs have been precision-guided by satellite or laser technology. However, many of these bombs—dropped by B-52s and other aircraft from tens of thousands of feet in the air—have strayed off course, hitting civilian targets." (WSWS, December 29, 2001)

In another report, a year after September 11, 2001, Matt Kelley of the Associated Press put the US munitions statistics as follows:

"U.S. and coalition airplanes have conducted more than 21,000 flights over Afghanistan, dropping more than 20,000 munitions. About 60 percent of the ordnance dropped on Afghanistan has been precision guided, the highest percentage in any conflict."

Similarly the Guardian reported on April 10, 2002:

"More than 22,000 weapons - ranging from cruise missiles to heavy fuel-air bombs - have been dropped on the country over the past six months…. US pilots dropped more than 6,600 joint direct attack munitions (J-dams), the satellite-guided bombs… One in four bombs and missiles dropped by the US on Afghanistan may have missed its target"

The new generations of hard target weapons whose warheads are made of uranium have contributed to the heavy contamination of land, water and general population. The carnage brought upon by the usage of these Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) would remain essentially forever. Depleted Uranium has a half-life of 4.5 Billion years. This means Afghans would be dying from cancers and other diseases for generations. For the past several years, the rate of various cancers have risen all over Afghanistan, however, the rate of this menace has been highest among the Pashtun people since they are on the receiving end of bombing raids. Imagine the magnitude of carnage and contamination caused by such barbarism.

The individual cases of slaughter are too many to list. However, I need to point out that American military shoots first and asks questions later. Many Afghans are shot on mere suspicion. In many cases, the person would be either going to work or coming from work.
The most serious of all the behaviors of the US military is their disregard for the privacy, dignity and lives of the Pashtun People. The behavior of the US military is similar to the South African police of the apartheid era entering Black African and Indian homes with no regard to their privacy. Similarly, American Soldiers enter Pashtun homes without any regard for their privacy and dignity. Moreover, they behave like thieves in the way they attack a residence at night when families are deep asleep. The entrances to peoples’ houses are blown with explosives and then men and boys are dragged from bed in full view of their children and wives. More often, before they could drag anyone from bed, they order their attack dogs to attack these families before they could leave their bedrooms. Consequently, many children are bitten to death. In many instances, after the inhabitants are bitten, the soldiers have shot indiscriminately. In Laghman Province, a man recalled the following event:

“At night, the Americans entered our homes, commandeered their attack dogs and then shot my son and my brother. I was asleep; when I woke up; a dog was standing next to me and bit me. Subsequent to that, the dogs pulled the corpse of my brother and son to the ally. We were terrified and abandoned our village.”

In another case in Khost, in mid-December of 2008, the home of Dr. Bilal was raided by the US forces. The US forces mistaken believed he was linked to Al-Qaida network while he worked for the province public health department. The AFP reported the following:

"The Americans entered without warning. They first killed one of my nephews, Amin, who was 14 years old, who was sleeping next to a rifle," says Bilal Hassan, who works for the provincial department of health.
"My brother went out with a gun. He was shot down, like his wife who followed him," he says.
A sister-in-law was hit in the spinal cord and paralysed [sic].
"Then they released their dogs," the doctor remembers. The dogs attacked the bodies and bit off some of the fingers, he says. Then they bit the wounded woman and a child of five. "They took our savings, all our guns, used for self-defence [sic], and even papers for some of our properties.... Why did they do all that?"

The question is why are Pashtuns specifically targeted? One of the answers could be the racist mentality of the American military. However, the most likely explanation is that Pashtuns are the custodians of Afghanistan and they have defended Afghan independence throughout history. As long as the Pashtuns remain a potent force, US-NATO alliance would not only succeed but also face a realistic prospect of utter defeat.
In all fairness, other militaries exhibit dreadful behaviors as well. However, the US military appears to be one of the worst violators among the so-called democratic societies.

American over Reliance on Tajiks and Other Minorities

In the aftermath of 911, the Afghan Tajiks who were affiliated with the brutal and rapist organization of Northern Alliance or were supporters of these criminals stepped forward to the Bush Administration to accomplish two things. First, it was an opportunity for them to undermine the Pashtun (Afghan) majority of the country. These Northern Alliance elements were toppled by Taliban in 1996 after they carried out some of the most gruesome atrocities ever committed in Afghan history. The Northern Alliance was formed from war criminals, rapist and human rights violators. Thousands of women disappeared during the reign of the Northern Alliance. Second, by offering their services as mercenaries, the Northern Alliance wanted to take advantage of the situation to control the post-Taliban regime. Despite the massive air power and indiscriminate usage of wide array of bombs, the Northern Alliance failed to break through Taliban defenses situated 90 miles north of the Capital Kabul. After 45 days of bombing, Taliban decided to retreat to the countryside.

With the Taliban’s retreat, the Northern Alliance forces entered Kabul. The first task on their agenda was the firing of most civil servants that spoke Pashto. The imposition of minorities that constitute roughly 37% of the population on 63% Pashtun created resentment among the Pashtuns. It is worth mentioning that the CIA World Facts Book is grossly inaccurate when it comes to the percentage of Pashtuns in Afghanistan. Dr Zirakyar has traced the pattern of false statistics in this book and presented his analysis as follows:

Until 1991, this type of “finished intelligence” registered Pashtuns as majority of the Afghan population (50% as ethnic group and as language group). Almost a year later in April 1992, the Northern Alliance (Masood-Rabani group) took over the power in Kabul. The World Factbook 1992, considerably lowered the statistical significance of the Pashtun ethnic group and their language (Pashto): 38% as ethnic group, and 35% as language group. In World Factbook 2009, statistical data for Pashtuns shows improvement as ethnic group (42%) but remained the same as language group (35%).”

He established the true number representing the percentage of Pashtuns in Afghanistan by tapping into the research of Wak Foundation:

“For the record, a six-year survey and research project (1991-1996) was conducted by WAK-Foundation for Afghanistan, the results of which was published in 1998 (1377 A.H.). According to this source, from the total population of Afghanistan, Pashtuns make up 62.73 percent as ethnic group and 55 percent as language group.”

Based on the pattern of falsehood illustrated in the CIA World Facts Book and consistently presenting false information about the Pashtuns, it would not be far fetched to state that there is an international conspiracy against the Pashtuns. That is why; Pashtuns are killed in Afghanistan and in Pakistan.

In the post US invasion, Pashtuns were cleansed from many areas in Northern Afghanistan, where majority of the minority Tajik population is living. Pashtun lands were confiscated, forcing more than 300,000 Pashtuns to become refugees to neighboring Pakistan. This group of people formed the backbone of Taliban insurgency against the US and their mercenaries of the Northern Alliance.

Incidentally, the Afghan Tajiks and other minorities were lining up to become translators and falsely claiming to speak Pashto. These individuals intentionally while others due to ignorance of Pashto language labeled every Pashtun the Americans arrested as member of Taliban and Al Qaida. That is why; the youngest inmate in Guantanamo Bay was 11 years old. The unfair mentality of the American military and the animosity of the Tajiks and other minorities toward the Pashtuns resulted in many tragedies. Many innocent Pashtun men were tortured and killed in Bagram.

The reader might ask as to why Tajiks have this type of animosity toward the Pashtuns. The answer is Tajiks were mostly artisans, musicians-entertainers and refugees from Central Asia ungrateful for the life they had in Afghanistan. Similar to most minorities in different parts of the world, they also wanted to occupy the power in the country. However, they desired power at the expense of Pashtun majority.

Consequently, Pashtuns whether they agreed with Taliban or not joined Taliban led insurgency to secure their rights. To this end, both Americans and their mercenaries have become their targets. Meanwhile, the Afghan National Army (ANA), which hardly has a national character, is dominated by Tajiks. Majority of the commanders of the ANA are Tajiks. Equally, the current President, who is from Kandahar, is more than eager to please these criminal elements of the Northern Alliance by instituting their language as the administrative language ignoring Pashto and Pashtuns. It is speculated that Karzai is half-Pashtun, hence, the influence of his maternal uncles, who are qazelbash, on him drew him away from his own language. At this point it is purely speculative; however, Pashtuns are trying to rationalize the indifference of Karzai by presenting various explanations.

This unnatural arrangement and oppression of the Pashtuns inspired Pashtuns to fight against Americans and their installed regime in Kabul.

Americans Lack of knowledge of the Pashtun Culture

Lack of knowledge of Pashtun culture is another important factor ensuring US’s defeat in Afghanistan. There are two sources wherein this lack contributes to the permanence of hostility of Pashtuns toward the US and her allies. The first issue is the tribal structure and the cohesion within the tribes in matters of self-defense. When a member of the tribe or sub-tribe is killed, the killer is not only the enemy of the family whose member he has killed, but rather he has gained the enmity of the tribe whose member he has murdered. Thus, the US forces have turned tribes, sub-tribes and villages against them by slaughtering their members in the hundreds and thousands. The second source is a tenet of the Pashtunwali—the Pashtun Code of Honor. This tenet is that of revenge, which goes hand in hand with tribal cohesion. A Pashtun father, brother, and son and tribesmen have to avenge the death of their relative. There is an old saying that after a Pashtun took his revenge after100 years, he said, “I think I rushed it.” This points to the permanence of hostility.

Surge or the Final Nails in the Coffin of US’s Defeat

With the hoopla of surge and new strategy, the US politicians and military leaders lack complete awareness of the Afghan society, especially the Pashtun culture. To the Pashtun people surge means continuation of the indignity imposed on them by the US and her allies. This means more Afghan civilians would die. This also means the continuation of the same pattern of disregard to the privacy of Pashtuns’ homes. In essence, Pashtuns view this as affirmation by the part of the political and military leaders that the crimes they have committed for the past 8 years are not crimes, but rather righteousness which adds insult to injury.

Furthermore, this would increase the resolve of the Afghan insurgency and their supporters. Meanwhile, the insurgents are working on obtaining modern Russian Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers. In the past, Afghan Mujahideen used RPG7; however, RPG7 is not effective against NATO armor. Hence, the most effective weapon would be RPG32, which penetrates all NATO and US armor vehicles and tanks. Furthermore, insurgents are also working on obtaining modern version of SAM7 anti aircraft shoulder-held missiles. This would be the final nails in the coffin of US’s defeat in Afghanistan.

I have tried in vain to get the attention of the US political and military leaders with my peace proposal to institute permanent peace in Afghanistan. But unfortunately, they showed no interest for the most part. My proposal ‘White Paper for Permanent Peace in Afghanistan’ is a comprehensive approach to a long lasting peace for Afghanistan.

After receiving cold shoulders from political and military leadership, I came to hypothesize that they must be gaining financial benefits in the form of contracts or perhaps even kickbacks. Otherwise, it would be natural to seek peace than war especially when the insurgency has gained a lot of momentum.

Conclusion

The above-mentioned factors outline a pattern of hatred and killing. This pattern contributed to the permanence of hatred and enmity of Americans and their allies. The violations outlined depict acts of righteousness on the part of the American forces and points to strong conviction on the part of the US-NATO forces to continue committing atrocities.

Finally, President Obama’s speech in Norway by referring to the genocide in Afghanistan as a ‘just war’ is adding insult to injury. The award of the Nobel Prize to the President of a country that is actively murdering Afghans and turning their environment uninhabitable with the continued usage of uranium munitions is a travesty of justice and an abomination that should be condemned worldwide. Moreover, the award of the Nobel Prize is affirmation of support on the part of the Western establishment that the murder and genocide of the Pashtun people is acceptable, and it strengthens the hypothesis that the war on terror is in part an international conspiracy against the Pashtun Nation.
