Letter on the Evening of the Martyrdom Operation: Humam (Hamam) al-Balawi, Abu Dujanah al-Khurasani, the "CIA Destroyer" of Afghanistan

UPDATE (Feb. 28): See my post on Al-Qa'ida Central's video interview with Humam al-Balawi HERE and a second post about the release of the full video of his "martyrdom" will, with Tehrik-i Taliban Pakistan leader Hakimullah Mehsud, HERE.

A special "gift" was released with the new issue (#16) of the jihadi-takfiri cyber magazine Vanguards of Khurasan (Khorasan),طلائع الخرسان , which was released yesterday: the last letter/essay from the Jordanian-Palestinian doctor, Humam (Hamam) al-Balawi, more commonly known among jihadi-takfiris by his nom de guerre "Abu Dujanah al-Khurasani (Abu Dujana Khorasani)," before his December 2009 kamikaze attack on a United States military base in Khost, Afghanistan. The attack killed seven U.S. Central Intelligence Agency operatives and a senior Jordanian intelligence officer, who was also a member of the ruling Hashemite family. Al-Balawi's letter/essay is entitled "Letter on the Evening/Night of the Martyrdom Operation of The Heroic/Gallant, Lion, Abu Dunajah al-Khurasani" and is 13 pages long (embedded below).

Vanguards of Khurasan is produced by the Al-Fajr Media Center, one of several shadowy transnational jihadi-takfiri media outfits, and the one that distributes all of the media materials for Al-Qa'ida Central (AQC) and its affiliates, Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), and the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an umbrella organization whose largest member group is Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI).

"The Lion, Abu Dujanah al-Khurasani"

For previous posts about al-Balawi, including a statement from Al-Qa'ida Central (AQC) claiming his attack, a nasheed (religious, politically-themed song) video dedicated to him, and an essay praising him by a cyber jihadi, see HERE.

"Abu Dujanah al-Khurasani: Destroyer of Jordan's Tyrants, Slave of Al-Lat (pagan goddess of pre-Islamic Arabia)"

Dr. Humam (Hamam) al-Balawi, "Abu Dujanah al-Khurasani" (lower two photographs), the "Emigrant-Martyr/Self-sacrificer," shown with Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi (top), arguably the most influential living jihadi-Salafi religious scholar and ideologue. Al-Maqdisi lives in the industrial city of al-Zarqa near the Jordanian capital, 'Amman. Al-Balawi is described in this cyber mural as, "your harvest, O' Shaykh of Absolute Monotheism," the result of al-Maqdisi's radical activism.

Iranian Baluchi Insurgents Jundullah Vow to Continue the Fight, say Goals not Embodied in One Man (Captured Leader 'Abdul Malik Rigi) & Jundullah Poem

Brief addendum to an earlier post on the main Views from the Occident blog about the recent capture of 'Abdul Malik Rigi ('Abdol Malek, 'Abdolmalek, 'Abdulmalik Rigi), leader of the Iranian Baluchi insurgent group Jundullah, by the Iranian government when it forced a Kyrgyz passenger plane to land in Iran. In the EARLIER POST, I ran four releases from Jundullah following his capture. Embedded below are official statements in various languages, including Persian and Arabic. I still have not found statements or even much discussion about Rigi or his capture on the major transnational jihadi Internet sites and forums. The group has never seemed to have been a major interest to transnational jihadi types, perhaps because of its ethnic-nationalist leanings, which is anathema to transnational jihadis. Even past support from Iranian Sunni Salafi radicals has seemed to be more about hatred of the Iranian Twelver Shi'i regime as opposed to real support for Jundullah or Iranian Baluchis.

In its statement (based on the Arabic one), Jundullah says that its ideology and goals are not embodied in one man, 'Abdul Malik Rigi, but are those of a people struggling for its rights. It vows to continue its "resistance" against the oppressive Iranian state. The group also blames "Western intelligence agencies," such as the United States Central Intelligence Agency, and Pakistan for assisting Iran's supreme leader (wali al-faqih), 'Ali Khamenei, in capturing Rigi.

Also, amusingly, is a Jundullah poem, also embedded below (first).

PBS Frontline: Behind Taliban (Hezb-i Islami of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, with Al-Qa'ida Central fighters) Lines

BEHIND TALIBAN LINES

This past fall, veteran Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi negotiated extraordinary access to a militant cell in northern Afghanistan with longtime ties to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. For 10 days, Quraishi would live among the hard-core fighters of Hezb-i-Islami's "Central Group" as they attempt to bomb a highway that has become a vital new coalition supply route.

"I was thinking that I'm going to meet a group of Taliban," Quraishi tells FRONTLINE. "I was thinking, this is the time which I came myself to enemy. I was thinking they might not let me go back."

In Behind Taliban Lines, FRONTLINE provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the growing insurgency in Afghanistan -- a first-ever film among these militants as they travel from village to village, picking up support and weapons, imposing sharia law and collecting taxes as they open up a new battlefront in Afghanistan's northern provinces.

"We have around 3,000 to 4,000 Hezb-i-Islami men in the north," a commander named Kalaqub tells Quraishi."People come to us from all over Afghanistan. … They come from Chechnya, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan. We get special mujahids from abroad, but we're not allowed to talk about them." Quraishi believes that these special mujahids are mainly Arabs from Yemen and Saudi Arabia trained by Al Qaeda.

Indeed, as the men of Central Group proceed toward their target, Quraishi meets a young bomb maker from Uzbekistan who says he was trained by Al Qaeda.

"America started this war in Afghanistan so that European countries like England and America would be safe," he tells Quraishi. "But they should know that once the mujahideen conquer Afghanistan, … we'll aim for the Middle East and Europe."

Quraishi films the men of Central Group building the IEDs, the improvised explosive devices -- stuffing the shells with gunpowder, wiring the blast cap -- and talking about the damage they hope to inflict: "This will pop out the eyes of the Americans," one says. "The fire, smoke and debris will cover 50 to 100 square meters." After a suspenseful night spent waiting in the field, the insurgents' plan is ultimately foiled when the bombs fail to detonate.

Quraishi manages to interview the man in charge of some 4,000 Hezb-i-Islami fighters in the north. His name is Cmdr. Mirwais, a former millionaire businessman who turned to jihad after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. "Jihad has become a duty for all the Afghan nation because the foreign and non-believer countries have attacked us," Mirwais says. "They're getting rid of our religious and cultural values in Afghanistan. They've increased obscenity and want to force Western democracy on our country."

It was Cmdr. Mirwais who first invited Quraishi to live among the insurgents as a guest, following the journalist's contact with a Taliban intermediary late last summer. And, after some 10 days of filming, it was Cmdr. Mirwais who Quraishi says may have helped save his life.

"Mirwais took my hand; he took me aside," Quraishi says."He said: 'Brother, I invited you here as a guest. I know your plan is to be here for 14 days, but I'm really sorry.'" Two men had arrived from Pakistan -- likely from Hezb-i-Islami and Al Qaeda -- and they demanded to know why an outsider had been allowed in to film among the fighters. "'They keep telling me that you are a spy and we have to behead you.'"

Quraishi escapes and decides to revisit the place on the highway where he'd witnessed the insurgents planting their roadside bombs. In a telling scene near the end of the film, the local Afghan police seem not to appreciate -- or even to acknowledge -- the extent of the insurgent threat in the north. "Everything's fine," the police chief says. "There's no problem. They've caused some problems, but everything's fine in this area near the main road. It's not a problem."

Afghan Taliban Spokesman Qari M. Yousaf Ahmadi about the General Situation in Helmand & Neighboring Provinces

Below is a statement from the Afghan Taliban, which refers to itself as the "Islamic Emirate [state] of Afghanistan" (as it did in the 1990s). The statement is run without edits.

The statement is about Helmand Province, where NATO, led by the United States, has launched a massive offensive on Taliban strongholds in Marjah.

Interview with Qari M. Yousaf Ahmadi, Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, about the General Jihadic Situation in Helmand and the Neighboring Provinces

February 25, 2010

Interview by Hekmat:

Q: How do you see the current Jihadic situation in Helmand province and other surrounding provinces?

A: Mujahideen’s resistance against the enemy attacks in Marjah, Nad Ali district, has been continuing as per the plan. According to our previous predictions and assessment, the enemy has now been entangled in battles in accordance with our tactical plan and the enemy losses have been spiraling up with the passage of time. The Mujahideen have destroyed a great number of the invading enemy tanks in various tip-and-run attacks. In addition to this, they have lost several soldiers. Reports from the battlefield of Marjah indicate, that the enemy forces are suffering from sagging morale. They are trying to take out their besieged soldiers from the area where they were deployed on the first day of the operation. However, the enemy infantry and tanks are under constant siege wherever they are stationed. Whenever they try to wriggle off from the tangle of the siege, they come under attacks and ambushes of Mujahideen or hit by planted mines. Similarly, Mujahideen constantly launch missiles attacks against the invaders. The invading foreign forces have not made any advancement despite great material and life losses inflicted on them and seem to be trying to retreat from the areas. Two days ago, the invading enemy airlifted their soldiers from Qari Sadi, evacuating the area.

Q: At the beginning of the enemy attack, the enemy was speaking of their victories and advancement. Reports said that they had taken some areas. Western media also were repeatedly reporting their victories. What is the reality?

A: All that which happened on the first day of the operations were in accordance with our tactical plan. We wanted to deal a crushing a blow at the enemy, so we allowed enemy forces enter some areas without any resistance. The enemy thought, it was their remarkable advancement in the battle filed. So they boastfully claimed of having captured Marjah. Even some high-ranking official of the Kabul Administration held celebration of victory in Marjah. The enemy has no advancement at the battlefield throughout the past two weeks except heavy losses and casualties. They know now that their claim about capturing Marjah was not at proper time or before time. The enemy infantry are under siege in areas where they were airdropped on the second day of the operations. Enemy tanks and military vehicles do not find any way to go out of the villages where they have entered . The enemy now uses pedestrians’ paths because Mujahideen have mined the main road with IEDs. There are deep-water canals on both sides of the main roads, which are not passable for enemy tanks and vehicles. Mujahideen snipers are targeting and ambushing them constantly. Wherever, the enemy intends to move, they face attacks and ambushes , mine explosions etc.

Q: In the past few days, the enemy had material and soul losses in Marjah. Please share with us enemy loss figures.

A: It is now two weeks since the inception of Marjah operations. According to reports from the battlefield, the following are enemy losses. We have given these figures at the disposal of mass media outlets from time to time.

Destroyed tanks 78

Foreign troops killed 382

Destroyed ranger vehicles 4

Domestic soldiers killed 36.

Similarly, Mujahideen in other areas of Helmand province have stepped up their attacks on the invading enemy simultaneously. According to data on our hand, 51 foreign and 23 domestic soldiers have been killed as yet. 17 tanks and 6 military vehicles of the enemy have been destroyed in the said areas.

Q: What is your opinion about the Jihadic situation in other neighboring provinces of Helmand. Reports say that high momentum is seen in Jihadic activities in this year particularly in this severe winter in comparison with other previous years.

A: Yes, You are right. In the current year, Mujahideen of neighboring provinces of Helmand, launched devastative attacks against the enemy causing great losses to them. We have been witnessing simultaneous attacks of Mujahideen on the invading foreign forces. This has given the enemy the jitters and diluted their manpower to focus only on one area. Despite the harsh winter, enemy had great losses. Figures about the invaders losses indicate that Mujahideen activities have spiraled up in these province as follows.

Kandahar:

Foreign troops killed 28.

Domestic troops killed 33.

Destroyed tanks 5.

Destroyed ranger vehicles 5.

Farah:

Foreign troops killed 29.

Domestic troops killed 17.

Destroyed tanks 8.

Destroyed military vehicles 3.

Zabul:

Foreign troops killed 3.

Domestic troops killed 26.

Destroyed tanks 1.

Destroyed military vehicles 4.

Uruzgan:

Foreign troops killed 5.

Domestic troops killed 19.

Destroyed tanks 1.

Destroyed military vehicles 3.

These figures of enemy losses show their losses occurred in a few provinces. If we count enemy losses at country level, we see clear impetus of Jihadic activities and escalation of the invaders casualties and materials losses. Even some high-ranking enemy officials admit the achviements of the Mujahideen. So we can say as a whole, the Jihadic situation is convincing. With the help of Allah, we are not facing any obstacle that could not be overcome.

Q: Dear Mr. Ahmadi! The Marjah operation is believed to be an experimental operation to test the new American strategy. Do you think the enemy would be able to reach their goal by launching such operations?

A: It is experimental operation. This is true. The enemy openly admits that Marjah operations were a test for the new strategy . If this is true , the enemy should have known by now that their defeat is definitely a certainty. We see the situation of the battlefields in Marjah is going against the wishes of the enemy and they have no gains. They resorted to every kind of propaganda stunts to boost their position but have no advancement for the last two weeks. The reason for the enemy’s failure is that they have not learnt from the past eight years’ experiences. They want to show their muscles once again under the name of new strategy and prolong their occupation of the country. However, such adventures only add to the enemy losses. They have to face life and material losses. On the other hand, the civilian casualties and their compelling of common people to leave their homes cause deep anger and resentments among the masses. The enemy has to review their policies as regards to our country. This is now an accepted fact, that Americans and other invaders are not able to continue occupation of Afghanistan through military means. It will be better for them to pull their forces out of our country and leave the Afghans to live under the shade of an Islamic system.

Hekmat: Thank you for the time to give interview.

Ahmadi: Thank you.

Islamist-Nationalist Anasheed: An Example from Lebanon's Hizbullah

I have written briefly previously about anasheed (singular: nasheed; religious/political-themed songs) used by Muslim political movements, particularly transnational jihadi groups such as Al-Qa'ida Central (AQC). They have also long been used by Islamist-nationalist (religious-nationalist) groups such as Lebanon's Twelver Shi'i Hizbullah ("God's party") and Palestinian secular nationalist and Islamist-nationalist groups such as HAMAS and Fatah. Embedded above is an example of a popular Hizbullah (Hezbollah, Hizballah) nasheed video, the type that frequently airs on its satellite TV channel, Al-Manar (The Beacon).

Entitled, "al-Maut li'Israel" (Death to Israel), the video reminds the viewer of some of the party's origins in the radical revolutionary ideology of Iran's Grand Ayatullah al-Sayyid Ruhollah Khumayni and his acolytes. It was in Lebanon that Iran's revolutionary Twelver Shi'i 'ulama were most successful in exporting Khumayni's doctrine of wilayat al-faqih (guardianship/authority of the jurisconsult). Iranian officials, such as its then-ambassador to Syria, Hujjat al-Islam (literally "proof of God"; mid-level Twelver scholar) 'Ali-Akbar Mohtashamipour, were key supporters of the coalition of Lebanese Shi'i militias that coalesced between 1982 and 1985 into a single party, Hizbullah.

Although it has transformed into a thoroughly pragmatic socio-political movement, Hizbullah has retained an element of its revolutionary nature from the days of its founding (exactly how much is debated by scholars and pundits, with some arguing it is and always has been an "Iranian proxy" while others argue that it is at its heart a Lebanese movement with ties to its patrons, Iran and Syria, in the same way, say, the United States provides tens of billions of dollars in foreign aid but does not "control" the countries it goes to, such as Israel, Egypt, and Jordan). On the issue of Jerusalem, one of Islam's holy shrine cities, Hizbullah and other Islamist-nationalist movements, it can be argued, maintain an element of transnationalism or cross-border solidarity with this particular symbol and cause.

Hizbullah has become particularly pragmatic, following the disastrous summer 2006 war with Israel, vis-a-vis the "Zionist entity," as it says. Its ideological stance vis-a-vis Israel, however, is often uncompromising, as exemplified in the lyrics to this nasheed. Israel, here, is referred to as the "usurping, occupying, terrorist-ic, cancerous" entity. It has "no legal right" to exist, the lyrics say. The footage is of the lengthy war between Hizbullah and the Israeli military, which occupied a large swath of southern Lebanon from 1982-late May 2000. Footage from the al-Aqsa (Second) Intifada (revolt) by the Palestinians against continued Israeli military occupation is also woven in. The singers vow to recover all of pre-partition Palestine including the "usurped" lands of Jerusalem (al-Quds), and they reference the 1930s Arab leader 'Izz al-Din al-Qassam, who was killed in 1935 fighting the British. The Palestinian HAMAS movement named its military wing after him, Kata'ib al-Shahid 'Izz al-Din al-Qassam (Brigades of the Martyr, 'Izz al-Din al-Qassam).

On the Internet, anasheed are often put together with visual montages to create nasheed videos. See the representative posts listed below:

*"AFPAK" anasheed in Urdu and Pashtu

*Arabic nasheed dedicated to Fort Hood murderer Major Nidal Malik Hasan

*Persian-language jihadi anasheed

*Nasheed video dedicated to the "CIA Destroyer" Dr. Hamam al-Balawi, "Abu Dunajah al-Khurasani"

*Commemorative video featuring clips of many jihadi anasheed dedicated to Americans who have traveled to Somalia and been killed fighting for the jihadi-takfiri insurgent group Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen (Movement of Warrior-Youth).

*Nasheed video dedicated to Tehrik-i Taliban Pakistan (Taliban Movement in Pakistan) leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

*Two anasheed videos, one about the corrupt Arab regimes and the other bemoaning Muslim apathy about the suffering of their fellow Muslims.

Afghan Taliban: Marjah Operations are an Exemplary Lesson for the Invaders

Marjah Operations are an Exemplary Lesson for the Invaders

Rabi' al-awwal 09, 1431 A.H, Tuesday February 23, 2010

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate

For the last two weeks, a 15,000-strong army of NATO, British and American forces has been carrying out military operations in a small are i.e. Marjah which is located in Nad Ali district. A number of jet bombers of the enemy including unmanned drones and 60 gunship helicopters are taking part in the operations. In addition to this, the enemy have brought to the battle field their huge and most advanced tanks by the name of Abraham and Shifton, which approximately weigh 65 tons. But despite the preparations, boasts and propaganda stunts, the enemy have not been able to make any headway against a small group of Mujahideen who are not more than 1000 armed men and their weapons are no match with those of the enemy. But still the sacrificing and committed Mujahideen have bravely blocked the invaders’ way successfully.

Skilled snipers have put shock and awe into the ranks of the enemy. The Mujahideen have blown up 53 tanks; shot down two unmanned drones and one helicopter besides killing tens of soldiers. An Afghan honor-loving woman made history by shooting soldiers pointblank in the bazaar. She revived the memory of Malalai of the past and proved by her heroic act, that still there are many sisters-in-arms of Malalai in this land. If we count the crews in the tanks which have been destroyed, we can easily conclude that the enemy losses are more than one hundred soldiers.

Approximate, just two weeks ago, McChrystal, top commanders of American forces in Afghanistan, was boasting and claimed that he would soon take Marjah from Mujahideen. But today he admits that they are facing stiff resistance, which he did not imagine before. He said we thought if we make announcement about Marjah before the inception of the operations, Taliban would either fled or lay down their arms but now we are facing tough resistance contrary to our expectations.

Similarly, the enemy twice tried to airdrop soldiers behind the line of the fighting but soon Mujahideen besieged them and after Mujahideen’s inflicting on them losses, the enemy hastily left the area. Major General Nick Carter, NATO commander of forces in Helmand says we will be able in three months to say whether the operations were success or not.

These are the words uttered by the enemy and they are the ground realities, which are a good lesson for the moribund generals of Pentagon and the new rulers of the White House Administrations. There are thousands of towns in Afghanistan like Marjah in addition to about 385 districts in the country.

Seeing that they were not able to take a small area like Marjah in two weeks, so ironically, how much decades and how massive force they would need to take the whole Afghanistan. Still it is a matter of pondering that the Mujahideen learn new tactics with the passage of time and their knowledge in the field of politics, culture and military experience increase with every passing day.

It will be better for the rulers of the White House to put an end to the current unsuccessful adventure in Afghanistan. All invaders, beginning with Alexander, the Great up to the time of the former Soviet Union have tried this adventure in this Mujahid-bearing land but they all failed. By traversing the same path of failure and fiasco, Obama only prolongs days and nights of his failure and disgrace. Similarly, Obama should stop resorting to other stratagems and ploys because the resistance of Mujahideen has now evolved into a mature phase. This candle could not be extinguished by just blowing it away. The caravan of the holy martyrs and fighters will surely reach its destination soon or later. If Allah willing.

Why Be Worried By Jihad?

Rabi' al-awwal 07, 1431 A.H, Sunday February 21, 2010

Jihad Fie Sabiilillah Its Interpretation and Objectives

Verily, all praise belongs to Allah, we praise Him, we beg for His help and we beg for His protection from the wickedness of our selves and from the ugliness of our deeds. Whoever Allah gives hidayah, none can misguide. Whoever Allah misguides, none can give hidayah. And I bear witness that there is no Ilah (God) except Allah, the One and Only God, He has no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

From the context of Lughah (Language), Jihad originates from the root word: "Jahada", meaning: Badzluth Thaaqah Wal-Wus'I, Au Huwa Al-Mashaqqah (Lisanul Arab 4/107, Taajul Arus 2/329, Asasul Balaghah 1/144 and Badaa-I' ush Shanaa-'I, Alkisani 7/97)

Whereas, from the context of shar'ie, Jihad is as illustrated in this hadith:

“A man asked Rasulullah SAW: What is Jihad? Rasulullah SAW answered: ‘Namely, you fight the kafir when you meet them’

The above words is a piece of saheeh hadith narrated by Ahmad with a sanad, and its Rijal is “al-Rijaalus Saheeh” (saheeh narrator).

Jumhur Fuqaha (majority of the Fiqh experts) argues that the kalimah "Al-Jihad", if interpreted unconditionally, means Al-Qital (war) and mobilizing every capacity with that war for the sake of establishing the kalimah (words) of Allah SWT.

An explanation that is quite comprehensive is as mentioned by Hanafiyyin:

"Mobilizing every effort and strength by conducting war in the cause of Allah Azza Wa-Jalla, with life, property and words and so on" (Badaa-I' ush Shanaa-'I, Alkisani 7/97)

As for the meaning of "Fie Sabiilillah", if interpreted unconditionally, it will it point to the interpretation that is required by the interpretation of Al-Jihad, i.e. it means Al-Qital (war in the cause of Allah) (Ats-Tsamratul Jiyaad Fii Masaa-ili Fiqhil Jihaad; 8). That is the reason why many authors inserted the hadith by Bukhari, "Whoever performs sawm one day in the cause of Allah, Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of) 70 years," into the chapter of Jihad. This could be referenced in the book At-Targhib wat-tarhiib by Al-Mundziry, Saheeh Bukhari and others."

Attention:

That, understanding the meaning of Jihad according to the interpretation of shar'ie is very important. In the same manner as the ibaadah of Solat and Sawm which have their unique rules and etiquettes as well as sunnahs, the same applies to Jihad.

For example, Sawm originally means “restraining and preventing.” Whereas, Solat means "praying and submitting wholeheartedly.” However, after Allah SWT has perfected His Dien (religion), it is not valid that one who simply restrains himself from talking improperly or from eating and drinking at anytime he likes is said to be having performed sawm. Likewise, one who merely prays and submit himself wholeheartedly could not be said as already having established solat.

The same thing goes for Jihad, this obligation is not automatically nullified when one already carried out da’wah or spent his wealth. Not even one from amongst the ummah, be it the salaf or khalaf (earlier and later Muslims) who understand the verse: “Go ye forth, (whether equipped) lightly or heavily,(At-Taubah: 41) or “..when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah..” (At-Taubah: 38) as: “Go out for thalabul 'ilmi (seeking knowledge),” or understanding it as, “Go out to do invite (da’wah) to goodness.” Therefore, it remains that if a word is interpreted in the context of shar’ie, then it is interpreted in a meaning that is specific and limited, it cannot be twisted to other interpretations unless there is a daleel (evidence) of comparison that can twist it otherwise.

So, know that if Jihad Fie Sabiilillah is interpreted unconditionally, whether we like it or not, it would mean conducting jihad against the kafir with the swords (weapons), until they become Muslims or pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued (Muqaddimah Ibnu Rushd 1/369).

Without understanding an issue using a mizan (barometer) of shar’ie, the affair would become chaotic and mazy, misconceptions would arise, the shar’ie wish and objective would disappear and become unaccomplished. We beg for safety and afiat (strength) from Allah SWT, in this dunya and akhira. O Rabb, do not let us be astray after You have given us hidayah, and grant us mercy from You, verily You are the Great Bestower of favours.

The Shar’ie Objectives of Jihad Implementation:

1. Destroying the obstructing walls that hinder the spreading of the Dien (religion) to every corner of the world, like what is mentioned by Allah SWT: " And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere;"(Al-Anfal: 39).

2. Preventing and removing tyranny while simultaneously establishing the pure Truth for the sake of wiping out evil and corruptions, Allah SWT says: "And did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief: But Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds." (Al-Baqarah: 251). And again He says: "To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged;- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid;- (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right,- (for no cause) except that they say, 'our Lord is Allah..' Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause);- for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will)." (Al-Hajj: 39-40).

3. Protecting the existence of the Muslims, their dignity and honor, as well as helping the weak people (Mustadh'afin), just as what Allah SWT says: "And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)?- Men, women, and children, whose cry is: ‘Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help!’" (An-Nisa:75).

4. Humiliating and terrifying the enemies of Allah SWT, simultaneously stopping their cruelty, just as Allah SWT says: "Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger Muhammad and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." (At-Taubah:29). And Allah SWT again says: “Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly.” (Al-Anfal: 60), and Allah SWT further says: “So fight (O Muhammad), in the cause of Allah: you are not held responsible except for yourself. And encourage the believers (to join you) that perhaps Allah will restrain the (military) might of those who disbelieve. And Allah is greater in might and stronger in punishment.”(An-Nisa: 84)

5. Purifying the hearts of the believers, eliminating the kafirs and selecting the shuhadas. Allah SWT says: “If a wound hath touched you, be sure a similar wound hath touched the others. Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men and men by turns: that Allah may know those that believe, and that He may take to Himself from your ranks Martyr-witnesses (to Truth). And Allah loveth not those that do wrong. Allah's object also is to purge those that are true in Faith and to deprive of blessing those that resist Faith. Did ye think that ye would enter Heaven without Allah testing those of you who fought hard (In His Cause) and remained steadfast?” (Ali Imran: 140-142), and Allah SWT again says: “…but (all this was) that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purge what is in your hearts. For Allah knoweth well the secrets of your hearts.”(Ali Imran: 154)

6. For the tamkin (setting up) and implementation of the Islamic shari'ah which is just, for the sake of mankind’s wellbeing, under the shade of the Manhaj of Allah SWT. Allah SWT says: “(They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs.” (Al-Hajj: 41). In a hadith, it was said: "I was ordered to fight people until they bear witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger, establish prayer and pay charity, but if they shall do so then they have made their blood prohibited for me and their judgement is with Allah." (Riwayah Bukhari and Muslim)

7. Relieving and removing the fury from hearts of the believers. Allah SWT says: “Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, help you (to victory) over them, heal the breasts of Believers, And remove the fury in their hearts. For Allah will turn (in mercy) to whom He will; and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”(At-Taubah: 14-15)

8. Other objectives promised by Allah SWT: "And another (favour will He bestow,) which ye do love,- help from Allah and a speedy victory. So give the Glad Tidings to the Believers." (As-Saff: 13)

Southern Thailand: Insurgency, Ethno-religious Nationalism, & Transnational Militancy: Communique from Thai Jihadis

*Below is a communiqué from just over two years ago from a jihadi group operating in southern Thailand in a region called Pattani DarusSalaam located near the border with Malaysia. Separatist movements have a long history in this region, though most are ethnic "nationalists" and not transnational jihadi-takfiris. More recently, some jihadi-takfiri groups have emerged. One of the signatories to the statement, a Shaykh Abu 'Abdullah, is identified as a "migrant" (Muhajir in Arabic), suggesting that he has come from outside the region/country. This suggests a possible transnational nature to the group issuing the statement.

I have changed some of the font colors and spacing. I also added one cyber poster about southern Thailand from my research archive.

Inaugural Issue of a New Urdu Jihadi-Takfiri Internet Magazine, As-Haab-e Kahaf, Released

The inaugural issue of a new jihadi-takfiri Internet magazine, As-Haab-e Kahaf, was announced and released on February 17. It is produced by a jihadi-takfiri media outlet called Idara As-Haab-e Kahaf, and it joins other Urdu-language jihadi-takfiri Internet magazines such as Nawa-i Afghan Jihad, Hittin, and Al-Furqan. Links to previous posts on these publications can be found at the end of this post.

Qandeel Siddique, a research assistant at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and contributor to the excellent blog Jihadica, edited by Dr. Thomas Hegghammer (currently of Princeton University), has a new post about an interesting article by 'Azzam Tariq ('Azam Tariq), the chief spokesman for Tehrik-i Taliban Pakistan which was in the January-February 2010 issue of Nawa-i Afghan Jihad. The post is informative and well-worth a read. She was kind enough to link to my brief "Twitter Specials" blog post with the PDF.

Somali Mujahid (Harakat al-Shabab Leader?) Calls the Tribes of Yemen to Jihad

"Winds of Victory from the land of Somalia," with pathways leading out from Somalia to all corners of the globe. "Winds of Victory" is the name used by the group to describe its ongoing insurgency against the interim government and its African Union backers.

*The Somali "mujahid" ("striver", in this context "warrior") may be Abu'l Zubayr, a leader of Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen (Movement of Warrior-Youth).

UPDATE (9:01 p.m., Feb. 19): An anonymous commenter says that the message is not from the Harakat al-Shabab leader Abu'l Zubayr. It is unclear how s/he "knows" this.

UPDATE #2 (3:35 p.m., Feb. 20): See the original Arabic message, posted by a user on one of the jihadi-takfiri web forums, an "Abu'l Zubayr al-Somali."

Message to the Tribes of Yemen, from [a] Mujahid in Somalia

Tribes of Yemen, the war has reached you, it has come to your abode and you are most able to face it. The messenger of God had indicated in a Hadith that the armies of Yemen will come from Aden and that they are the best of armies. The Yemeni front is ablaze; thus be as good as people think you are.

The banner has reached us here in Somalia and the enemies have gathered against us from every direction. Against us, they launched a brutal war and they plotted machinations to keep us away from the causes of Muslim. And despite the fact that some tribes were hesitant at first, and some were fearful because of the false Crusader media`s cloaking their forces with a veil of deceptive media coverage, they threatened and frightened the world. But in the end, thanks to the determination of their children, the few, and their steadfastness, they (the tribes) championed the jihad and supported the mujahidin. Today, here they are championing the oppressed and working to restore the caliphate, and what did the Crusaders do?

"Yemen: Land of Wisdom and Aid/Reinforcements"

Tribes of Yemen, do not be frightened by your enemies` threats to invade you by land and by sea. Do not be frightened by the fabrications of the hypocrites. By God, they are too cowardly to confront and fight you and the best example is the tribes of Somalia. Ask them about the threats. Did they wipe them out; did they force them to surrender? By God, they did not, rather, they emboldened them and strengthened their pride and unity.

Proud tribes of Yemen, today is your day. Do not let your enemy see either weakness or disagreement in you. The enemy has grown weaker and powerless from fighting the mujahidin in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia. It has come to you in its most weakened state. Therefore, you have no excuse to let it occupy your lands, desecrate your sanctities, slaughter your children, and destroy your homes, for you are a people of pride and faith.

People of Yemen, do not be the last to champion Shaykh Abu Abdullah (Usama Bin Ladin), may God protect him. He is from you and you are the first who acknowledged his good deeds. I know this is not going to be the first time you champion him. Everyone knows that your sons were the first to immigrate to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia. But this time, the fate of the battle is to be determined in your land and sea and it is in your own hands. After that, the turn of Jerusalem will come, and then it will be time to restore the caliphate.

Tribes of Yemen, you have no excuse to fail Shaykh Usama. After the tribes of Somalia, Kenya, Abyssinia, and the sons of Sudan and Nigeria have come to champion him, you have no excuse to fail him now. It is inconceivable that the tribes of Africa are more eager to defend and champion Islam and protect its sanctities than you. Repent to God and defend the position of Islam. Champion Abu Abdullah. By God, he returned the nation to its glory and unity, so what is there to say, now that the tribes of Kenya have understood the matter and emerged from the jungle to support `There is no god but God.`

Tribes of Yemen, our rendezvous is at sea and the Bab al-Mandab (strait). The tribes of Somalia, along with the tribes of the jungles of Kenya and Abyssinia, the people of Sudan, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and all of the people of Africa are ready. Do not miss the rendezvous and do not be afraid, for you are no cowards and this is how we regard you. We are confident that we will see you at sea just as we have been accustomed to see in the past. It is no coincidence that Abu Abdullah came from you, and it is no coincidence that the messenger, prayers and peace be upon him, mentioned you (in Hadiths).

May God`s peace, blessings, and mercy be upon you.

Abu Zubayr Alsomali

February 2010 Issue of the Afghan Taliban's Internet Magazine, Al-Samood, Released

The new (February 2010) issue of the Afghan Taliban's monthly Arabic magazine Al-Samoud (Al-Somood) has been released. "Al-Samoud" translates approximately to the ability to withstand something or "staying power." In context, it can also mean something akin to "resistance." The magazine began as a simple newsletter-type publication with no graphics, but over the past couple of years has developed into a much more refined (design-wise) Internet publication.

As always, I find the magazine's regular feature, "Our Martyrs, The Heroes" (Shuhada'u-na, Al-Abtal), to be among the most interesting things in it. I am struck by how young many of them are, many the same age or younger than I and many of my friends and my graduate student colleagues. Surreal.

Leah Farrall, a doctoral candidate in transnational jihadi movements and a former practitioner with the Australian Federal Police, has noted another interesting piece, a historical analysis of the group commanded by Jalaluddin Haqqani, one of the most powerful Afghan Pashtun insurgent leaders who is believed to have close ties with foreign groups operating in the country, including Al-Qa'ida Central's (AQC) "AFPAK" brigades. He bears the dubious "honor" of having, allegedly, introduced kamikaze (suicide) "martyrdom" operations to the conflict.

Embarrassingly for the United States government, he was reportedly one of the Central Intelligence Agency's key assets during the 1980s Jihad (literally "struggle"; in this context military struggle/war) against the Soviet Union and its Afghan Communist allies. By the way, her blog is highly recommended.

Also interesting (to me, perhaps because I'm currently toiling through a Hadith Sciences translation seminar) is a piece toward the end, "Sincerity in Acts of Worship" (al-Ikhlas fi 'Ibadat), which appears to be a collection of topical ahadith, reports of sayings and actions attributed to the Prophet Muhammad through chains (Asaneed; singular: Isnad) of transmitters (Ruwaat; other terms are also used) by Sunnis. The asaneed seem to have been truncated, perhaps for space.

For Shi'is, such reports may also be attributed to their Imams, historical leaders whom they believe were imbued with Divinely-appointed authority and abilities to interpret the Qur'an, particularly its "hidden" or esoteric (Batin) meanings.
