The Brigades of 'Abdullah 'Azzam, a transnational jihadi-takfiri group operating in Lebanon, issued a statement of condolence a day ago about the "martyrdom" of Al-Qa'ida Central's (AQC) general commander in Afghanistan, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid. The group is named after the prominent Palestinian religious scholar who was a major fundraiser and ideologue during the 1980s for the anti-Soviet and anti-Afghan Communist struggle in Afghanistan. A new branch of the Brigades, the Detachments of Ziyad Jarrah (sometimes transliterated as "Ziad Jarrah"), named after one of the September 11, 2001 hijackers, was announced in June 2009, which I wrote about at length HERE. This new branch has claimed to have fired a small number of homemade, primitive rockets into northern Israel.
The statement of condolence was issued in the name of the Brigades as a whole, not just in the name of the Detachments of Ziyad Jarrah.
