Sadr Movement Condemns Recent Baghdad Attacks

Al-Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr (left) and his father, Grand Ayatullah al-Sayyid Muhammad Sadiq al-Sadr, who was assassinated in 1999 by the Iraqi Ba'th government of Saddam Husayn.

The Sadr Movement (Tayyar al-Sadr) issued a statement yesterday through its political council condemning the recent bombings and attacks in Baghdad, expressing condolences to the victims and their families. One of the group's leaders, Qusay al-Suhayl, called the attacks an attempt at "political blackmail" during a period of political unrest following March parliamentary elections. The attacks were probably carried out by the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an umbrella for several of the most militant jihadi-insurgent groups operating in the country, chief among them Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI).
