Hizbullah Condemns Attacks on Shi'i Pilgrims in Iraq, Blames Occupiers, Does Not Mention Probable Perpetrators by Name

Hizbullah secretary-general al-Sayyid Hasan Nasrallah

The Lebanese Shi'i political party and social movement Hizbullah has issued a condemnation of two recent attacks on Twelver Shi'i pilgrims in Iraq for Arba'in, the "40 day" commemoration of the martyrdom of Husayn bin 'Ali, the third Shi'i Imam, and dozens of his male friends and relatives on the barren plain of Karbala in southern Iraq. Hizbullah ultimately places blame for the attacks at the feet of the occupying forces, namely the United States. The statement makes no mention by name of the probably perpetrators of the attacks, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an umbrella for several of the most violent jihadi-takfiri insurgent groups operating in the country, chief among them Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI). Based on the ISI's recent history, I expect a statement from the ISI in the near future claiming both attacks. As I have argued before, the ISI is forgoing frequency for potency in its attacks, taking time to plan larger attacks rather than a greater number of attacks. Given the dramatic and deadly success of its current campaign in Baghdad against government institutions, which it has dubbed the "Expedition/Raid of the Prisoner/Captive," the ISI's new strategy has been a smart one.

The language Hizbullah uses in its Arabic statement about the attacks is significant. They refer to them as "العمليات الإنتحارية ," which translates to "operations" with the characteristic, in an adjectival sense, of "suicide." The official English translation by the party translates it as "suicidal." The term equates to, "operations (resulting in) suicide." Hizbullah refers to the kamikaze operations it has carried out against Israeli military forces in southern Lebanon and their Lebanese allies, the South Lebanon Army militia, and kamikaze operations carried out by Palestinian Islamist groups such as HAMAS as "العملية الإستشهادية ," which translates to "martyrdom operations."

Hizbullah Strongly Condemns the Hideous Suicide Bombings that Targeted the 40th Demonstrations in Karbala

February 3, 2010

Commenting on the suicidal operations that targeted the visitors of Imam Hussein (pbuh) in Iraq yesterday and today, which led to many martyrs and wounded, Hizbullah published the following statement:

Hizbullah strictly condemns the hideous suicidal attacks that targeted demonstrations heading to Imam Hussein's (pbuh) shrine in Karbala yesterday and today.

Such attacks constitute a continuation of the collective killing crimes that seek to exploit the shedding of the innocent blood to sow sedition among the people of Iraq. This crime is set by criminals that are filled with ignorance that assist the plan of hegemony and the longitude of the American occupier.

It is the duty of all leaders and scholars to firmly stand on the way of anyone that may try to provoke sedition and promote a bad atmosphere that is used by the occupying
forces through using sick souls as a tool to agitate Iraq and its stability.

These awful crimes are set to be a shameful imprint on the face of the occupier, that took advantage of the appropriate circumstances to grow this illicit cancer that is
disquieting Iraq and its people.

We are commemorating the 40th anniversary of Imam Hussein (pbuh) the reviver of the truth ahead of the tyranny. So, in recalling his immortal humane sacrifices, we consider those who murdered him and his visitors as a one faction of astray.

We give our condolences to the oppressed parents of the martyrs and we pray that God grants His Mercy to them as well as healing the wounded as soon as possible.
